Love in test doses…

Our class was made up of all kinds. From the studious nerds to the totally crazy b****s. Yes, it was indeed a girls only class. We didn’t have the luxury of making friends with boys even though there were plenty in our school. Ours was not a co-ed, the school worked on shifts. Morning, the school was occupied by the girls and in the afternoon by the boys.

There was a very brief period of time daily, during which these two shifts crossed each other’s path. Or for the lack of a better word, coincided. In the premises there were clear imaginary markings as to the areas were the boys were allowed to gather before the long bell rang and the girls walked out of their classes. Come to think of it, you can compare it to the theatres. Where people await for the previous show to end and their show to begin. The only difference being, in the latter case, the movie hall gets cleaned and prepped up for the next show. But in school, the boys didn’t have that luxury. They had to make do with the mess that we girls left in the classrooms. But then again, imagine if it was the other way around!

Many a love story has bloomed from those classrooms. Even the strict prefects and teachers who become human guards between the two species every single day, couldn’t prevent love from blossoming in young hearts. I am using the term love here, cause in those days we were naive enough to believe that it was love.

Our classrooms had separate metal with wooden top desks with matching chairs for each child. The desks had an area under it which was a temporary storage space for us to use when in class. These had to be emptied before leaving class, lest you forget your precious pencil box or lunch box or God forbid books. Boys almost never handed them over to lost and found. This was also the best way to exchange love notes. And yes, the boys and the girls somehow managed to get the right note to the right class and hence to the right person. It was somewhat like the dabba walas in Mumbai. Precision and on time delivery guaranteed.

Then there were parties outside of school where the two species met. Dandhia nights, common family friend homes and I have heard there were teens only party nights too. Not all were lucky enough to get permissions to attend these. The communication channels were not entirely closed. Even though mobiles hadn’t come in then, telephones were useful in this scenario too, especially if both parents were working. In those days caller id was an unknown thing. Those were the days of crank calls and obscene remarks from total strangers. And no one bothered to register complains for such seemingly harmless flirtations. Of course, misuse happens and then brilliant people come up with caller id to identify the perverts. So yeah, telephones were pretty useful too.

Like everyday, school buses stop every 5 minutes in front of our building. Today, I was taken back to those days of my life. School days, however stressful they may seem, always end up being memorable. Friends, foes, lovers, fights, makeups and breakups. School does teach us so much. But sadly, we really understand and respect these long after we have left the school premises.

So, what are your school memories. :-)

Compulsive Personal Blogger

One of the most important things that blogging has taught me, is that people everywhere are quite the same. Fundamentally, that is. Whether it is a female blogger or a male blogger, the reasons behind blogging and the processes are very much similar.

It’s when a person has so much to say and not enough audience that he/she turns to blogging. The people around them may love them to bits. But they just need people other than those to comment and understand them. Yes, the basic need of a blogger is to be understood.

Men generally tend to discuss social, economic, political issues. Sometimes imaginary stories are woven and sometimes anecdotes with colleagues and friends are shared. Other’s experiences are generally what you will find in these blogs. Rarely will you be able to find out anything about the personal life of the blogger until and unless it is explicitly mentioned in his profile or if you are friends with him on a personal level. And I am not talking about which industry they work in or which in which country they reside.

Women generally tend to express a lot more of their personal side on the blog. Even if the topics are socio, economic or political issues, it’s always about the first hand experience or personal thoughts. They put it in a safe way so as not to create a situation to receive brickbats. The reason why these women hate brickbats, at least I think so, is because it affects them in more ways than one. They are the more sensitive gender and find it hard to relax until the issue has settled down. She carries the burden of the entire house/world/family/work on her shoulder. She needs a balancing act. And an added arena for fight is totally unneeded for her. Her blog is her breath of fresh air. No room in it for anything else.

I blog because I love the idea of my thoughts being displayed on a screen, and I love it when people comment on them. Its more personal than most blogs I have visited. But then again, that’s how I am. I am a Compulsive Personal Blogger (CPB). It’s just a need to write and express and show off. Its small things like these that make or break a day. And life is just that, a day after a day and waiting for another day to come tomorrow. And the brickbats, two teenagers and a Taurean husband can do wonders on that front.

Why do you blog? Are you a CPB too?

And now it begins

It’s not really the incident that effects people’s lives. It’s always its aftermath. For instance, if a child refuses to study during his free time at home, the aftermath would generally be failed grades. The fact that the child did not study is secondary to the fact that it failed the tests. That’s what the child remembers. And like a link back the incident too comes back into memory.

As you may know, we shifted back to Dubai this September and the kids joined a different Board of Education. Thankfully still Indian, but even then a different curriculum. Since they missed Term I (from April to July), they have been struggling to make it up.

Since the incident with his injured knee, my son refuses to open up his books. Now he has a weeklong back log to add to the term lessons that he missed. Isn’t he supposed to worry about that? Apparently no! His class teacher gave me a number to contact and collect notes for him so that he can complete them over the weekend. Looks like our weekend (Fri/Sat) is well planned already!

So I guess what I am trying to say is that, the son is back on his feet again. But since he is still a bit wobbly while he walks, he is at home today too. The plaster is off. He finally had a complete refreshing bath yesterday and is sound asleep now. Little does he know that as soon as he wakes up, I am going to confine him to his room with only his books for company for the rest of the weekend!

I know I am the devil, but what am I supposed to do? I would rather he not have an aftermath to this incident. I think the incident too is an aftermath of not being careful while defending the football. Defending life and body parts should be much more important than a stupid ball!

Sigh! For once I am not looking forward to a weekend.

Grande Arche – Paris

We were equipped with the Paris Pass Guide Book, plus a few Metro,REM, bus and rail maps. That’s the confidence with which we began exploring Paris. The most Romantic City in the world was the destination of a lifetime for us. It was our 15th wedding anniversary and this trip was to make the occasion more special. A place like Paris has a lot to offer. Either it be for honeymooners, retired folk, young folk or even the kids. The Paris Pass even tells you the course to follow if you want a specific kind of tour of Paris.

Though there was a family course to follow, we couldn’t follow their time table. Hence, we made our own route. The first place we landed at was the Grande Arche at La Defense.

This part of Paris, is considered the Technology Hub, with a lot of companies opening offices in the buildings surrounding this Arche. Compared to the other parts of Paris, this place has more modern high rise buildings. The color code of this place, with a vast ground and steps, makes this modern monument a place to relax and enjoy some family time. The Perfect setting to take in the calmness of an active Parisians Friday Evening Rendezvous Point.

THESE PHOTOGRAPHS WILL BE UPDATED SOON. THEY ARE IN A HARD DISK IN A DIFFERENT COUNTRY. WAITING TO GET IT BACK!

Enchanting Munnar – May 2011

Even though this was not a properly planned vacation, it turned out to be a refreshing one. Since it was a last minute decision, there was an issue with the non availability of good accommodations. According to me, Tall Trees is a good option. There were no rooms available when we checked through their website. But when we checked through Expedia, we were able to book a cottage for ourselves.

We were under the impression that maybe Expedia has a special booking scheme with them, which makes the cottages available there. But we were in for a shock when we called up the resort with our reservation number. They said, there were no cottages available at all. Apparently they had not updated the information. Its just a matter of 6 hours or so by car from where I live to Munnar. So If we had just landed straight in Munnar without calling up first, we could have always come back the same day. But imagine if you had done the booking from overseas and this happens! I have no idea how they would accommodate the customers then!

Anyways, we had to settle for a smaller cottage (and there are many in Munnar), but we stayed only for a night and two days instead of the three night/four days we had initially planned.

The place is perfect for Honeymooners and for elderly couples to rest and relax. Munnar doesn’t offer many tourists attractions. There are dams and wildlife sanctuaries to visit. Since it was not the season for it, we didn’t take the Safari into the forests. We did Visit the Kanan Devan’s Tea Factory. The kids wanted to get back home soon, there was nothing for them there. But they too wouldn’t deny the peaceful effect the place had on us. It was cool, the rooms didn’t even have a fan. Even then we were quite comfortable. We were lucky enough to have missed the heavy rains there, and the bit of  sight seeing that we did do there was cool and not wet.

I forgot to take my camera for this trip! So these are the mobile pictures. The beauty of the place cannot be captured by any lens though. It was mesmerizing.

Disneyland Paris

Disneyland Paris comprises of three different parts.

  1. Disneyland  Park
  2. Walt Disney Studios Park
  3. Disney Village

The tickets are available for purchase online here.

We booked the tickets for Disneyland from the hotel in Paris itself. We booked 2 Day – 2 Park Ticket, that allows multiple entries and exits to 1 and 2 parts of Disneyland Paris for two consecutive days. Part 3, the Disney Village, is free entrance for everyone. This basically contains restaurants and shops. There is a “Hot Air Balloon” in Disney Village, the tickets for these can be purchased from there itself.

The “Ticket” purchased includes all the rides inside both the parks only. Everything else like food and shopping are obviously charged. There is a variety to choose from. At the ticket counter, and at various other designated places, maps of both these parks are distributed. It gives you all the information you need to make the most of your day.

Disneyland Park is divided into 5 lands:
